Pressed Down & Shaken Together

Over the years I have enjoyed spending time in the kitchen teaching my girls the basics of baking. We have learned that recipes are rarely just a list of suggestions, that you should never dump an entire bag of powdered sugar into a stand mixer running on high, and you definitely need sugar to make brownies edible.  🙂

Some other baking tips I’ve passed on to them from my vast store of knowledge & experience have to do with the proper way to measure various ingredients. For example, the teaspoon of salt should be level…not heaping. The lines on a measuring cup are best seen at eye level. And, when measuring flour, don’t press the flour down into the cup or you won’t get an accurate measurement. Measuring flour always reminds me of the verse in Luke:

“Give, and it will be given to you; a good measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over—will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.”    Luke 6:38

What a wonderful description of how God blesses us! He doesn’t just barely fill our cup…He fills our cup, shakes it together, adds some more, presses it down, and adds some more until our cup is overflowing!

We pray for a new job after being laid off, and God gives us a new job with better hours, better pay, a flexible boss, and co-workers who get together for prayer before clocking in each day.

We pray for God to save a lost friend or relative, and God saves them, their children, and their future grandchildren, and makes them a strong and passionate leader in their church!

We pray for God to provide what we need to pay an unexpected bill, and God provides the money we need to pay the bill, cover the unexpected expense of a school field trip and a basketball jersey, with enough left over to get an ice dream at Chick-Fil-A!

What a great and generous God we serve!

My sister, Hannah, & her husband, Brandon, have been praying for the blessing of a child for years. Two weeks ago they received a call from their adoption agency saying they could pick up their son in a week! On the day they went to pick up their son, they received a phone call from a birth mother who wanted them to adopt her newborn daughter. They signed the papers to bring her home yesterday! In two weeks they went from a family of two to a family of four! Blessing on top of blessing- pressed down and shaken together! 🙂

What a great and generous God we serve!

Now a family of four!
