Parenting teenagers is easy…Easy like Sunday morning!
In our experience as a pastor’s family, Sunday morning is often the most crazy, stressful, tiring, overwhelming morning of the week! It’s the day where anything can (and probably will) go awry. Missed alarms, burned breakfasts, wayward shoes, stained clothing, sickness, arguments, flat tires… if it’s gonna happen, it’s gonna happen on Sunday morning.
Parenting teenagers is “easy like Sunday morning.”
As crazy as Sunday mornings are for us, getting the whole family to church so we can worship and serve together is totally worth the craziness. We can endure the busyness at home so we can enjoy the quiet of worship. We can persevere through the turmoil of the unexpected so we can experience the peace of His presence.
Parenting teenagers is…
Stressful, exciting, emotional, tiring, fun, hilarious, overwhelming…
One minute you’re laughing over a silly internet meme, the next you’re dealing with tears over relationship struggles. You wrestle with fashion choices, curfews, and algebra. You dance together in the kitchen, spend hours looking for the perfect prom dress, remind them- again- to do their homework and chores, and stay up late talking about life and love and God. You hope they remember what you’ve taught them, worry that you haven’t taught them enough, and question whether you’ve messed them up forever.
Cannot be done without the grace of God.
When we don’t have the answers, His grace is enough.
When we are too tired to enforce the rules, His grace is enough.
When we wish we had done things differently, His grace is enough.
When they leave the nest and we wonder if we should’ve done more, His grace is enough.
“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in your weakness.”
Our weaknesses turn to strength when we rely upon the Lord. Hard conversations, loud parties, sleepless nights… are easy when we’re not trying to do them on our own. We can persevere through the unexpected emotions and actions of our teenagers because we have experienced the peace of God’s presence in our life. Parenting teenagers isn’t easy, but we’re not doing it alone. His grace is enough.
Parenting teenagers is like Sunday morning.
It’s not easy, but it’s totally worth it.
