Fridays are My Favorite

I love Fridays! That’s the day my husband and I take to spend together as our day “off.” We send the girls to school and then we usually go to breakfast just the two of us. As a side note, we found the most wonderful local restaurant that makes an unbelievable breakfast! Dee’s Diner in Owensboro, KY has homemade biscuits & gravy, 3 egg omelets with any toppings, and pancakes the size of man-hole covers! Delish!

My new favorite splurge

So after we indulge in massive amounts of breakfast carbs…we spend the rest of the day walking around the mall, hiking at the state park, riding bikes around town, or just sitting at a picnic table feeding french fries to some very aggressive squirrels. We talk about our kids, our hopes and dreams for the future, our fantasy football teams…The only rule is NO CHURCH TALK. We do not tweak the upcoming Sunday service. We do not do any VBS, Fall Festival, Christmas program, or Revival meeting planning. We do not gripe about who has disappointed us or repeat criticisms we have overheard. We do not worry about who missed services last week or fret about whether or not there will be enough offering to pay us. On Fridays we do not talk about church…but we do talk about God.

Sometimes I forget that church and God are not the same thing. Sometimes living in ministry hinders my relationship with God. I spend all my time and energy doing things for God rather than actually spending time with Him. That’s one reason I love Fridays…I get to take a step back from ministry work and focus on my relationship with God and my husband.

Back to Fridays…On Friday we turn off our phones (except for when we’re walking around separate sections of Wal-mart and we need to find one another…what did we ever do before cell phones, right?) If people have an emergency they can leave a message and we will call them back. Very few true emergencies actually happen on Fridays. However, lots of worries, frustrations, guilt trips, whining, counseling sessions, & prayer chains happen on Fridays. So, we turn off the phones so we can be reminded of what it means to Be Still And Know That [He] Is God. And so we have several hours of mental peace before the big events of the weekend.

I also look forward to Fridays because we eat candy. All day. Jeff usually gets a couple of packs of dollar candy like fruit slices or Twizzlers. I have found a new favorite candy bar to indulge in: The Firecracker. It’s a gourmet chocolate bar that includes dark chocolate, chipotle peppers, and popping candy. It melts in your mouth, starts crackling, and BOOM! Heat and flavor explode in the back of your mouth! It’s divine! And the best part is that it’s too spicy for anyone else in the family, so I don’t have to share. 🙂

I’m excited because today is going to be one of the best Fridays of the year! Krispy Kreme donuts for breakfast, no housework, lots of candy, no church talk or cell phones, AND 200 miles of yard sales passing through our town!!! It just doesn’t get any better than that! 🙂

Yard Sales stretching from Elizabethtown to Paducah here in KY

So what is your favorite day of the week? Does your husband ever take a day off from ministry? What do you do on your day off?

I'm a pastor's wife with two growing daughters striving every day to be the best ME that God created me to be! I'm passionate about communicating the amazing truth of God's Word in new and creative ways. I am creative and messy, outwardly fun-loving but secretly shy; sparkly, frizzy, joyful, and casual. I hate mustard, roaches, doing laundry and monkey movies. I love music, chocolate, flowers, and the beach. This blog is about my life and thoughts as a "not so perfect" pastor's wife. Living, learning, and loving to lead in the Lord. (See? I have proven that I'm married to a pastor by my alliteration abilities!) ( =

  1. Hooray for Friday, and a day of mental rest for you guys! It’s always a good idea to “reboot.”

David and I spend Mondays together. We try to sleep in a little. Have an extra long restful morning reading while enjoying several cups of coffee. Then we eat brunch around 10:30 or 11. We chat a while, more coffee, then shop or putter in town. Of course by then it’s time to empty some of that coffee, so I know where every clearn restroom is.

Happy Friday Stephanie. I know you’ll enjoy your day! Wish I could be there to yard sale with you. How fun!
